Ah so you want to make more money than Donald Trump saves on his tax return each year?

 

Enter mini rant!

 

So I know some bloggers who claim to not be interested in monetizing their blog.

And that’s great!

However, I know A LOT of bloggers who are interested in monetising it “some day”.

But they are not prepared to learn how to do this or figure out it’s possible

The way I see it is if you can monetise your blog to replace your income you can spend more time on it and really add value to more people.

So why wouldn’t you be interested in monetising your blog?

Unless you’re not interested in really adding value to others and it is just a hobby?!

 

End rant… sorry I’ll climb down from my pedestal now!

 

Anyhoo… there are 3 main ways to monetise a website/ blog/ YouTube account etc.

  1. Adverts/ Sponsors
  2. Affiliate Marketing
  3. Creating and selling your own products

Adverts

Have you ever heard of Google Adsense?

 

This is the most common way of getting paid from having adverts on your website.

You know those ads at the start of a Youtube video? Yeah that’s Adsense.

The person who made the video will get around $0.04 per viewer (roughly!)

 

The same can be done on a website. You know those ads on at the side of a website?

Yep, you guessed it… same thing!

 

When you’re getting heaps of viewers every month this can be a great way to generate some cash.

If you’re like me then you probably get annoyed by these ads!

So if you are still pretty new, you may want to consider whether it’s worth putting them on your website to get a couple of dollars a month.

 

It’s personal preference and I know some people do it just to learn how it’s possible!

 

Affiliate marketing

Now, let me ask you this…

 

Are you interested in earning pennies or dollars?

 

Well, affiliate marketing is how you can start earning some dollars. This will be the main income for most people in the online world once they start to get established. 

 

What is Affiliate Marketing?

It’s connecting people to a product they are looking for online.

A lot of people will want to get going with an online business and won’t really have their own products to sell.

So it’s possible to get a commission for recommending other people’s services or products (a commission of anything from 4-75%).

 

Here are some affiliate websites that many people will use to find a whole variety of products:

  • StudioPress- WordPress themes
  • ConvertKit– Autoresponder
  • Bluehost– Hosting service
  • Tailwind– Pinterest scheduler

And last but certainly not least…

 

Create your own products

This is often where people make the big bucks online!

It’s typical for online marketers to make a bit of income from adverts and affiliate marketing.

Once this becomes regular the natural path is to create their own product, get others to be an affiliate of this and start gaining more of the profits from their product (100% if bought through their own website or however much is left over after paying an affiliate)

 

This is often when $10,000 a month becomes $100,000+ per month.

5. What Plugins Should I Use?

I wish I had the foresight to even be aware of what a plugin was when I started out!

Some of these are literally lifesavers, and I don’t know how I used to live without them!!

 

Here are the MUST HAVES:

Yoast SEO

This is the FIRST MUST HAVE!!

Literally, get this and learn the basics of writing for SEO.

Just remember to use this as a template NOT gospel!

 

SumoMe

This is how you can really drive your traffic and increase your sign-ups to your email list.

 

An absolute must-have if you have any interest in monetising your website.

 

Pretty Links

If you have affiliate links coming out of your ears then this is a great way to not let Google get suspicious about your website.

General rule:

If you are linking to related content then DO NOT use a pretty link. Google likes to see that you do link to relevant other real websites

If it’s an affiliate link, use a pretty link (it makes it look like it is an internal link to your website)

 

Some VERY close behind must haves:

W3 Cache

It makes your website faster.

Faster = better user experience = better SEO = good for you

Period.

 

EWWW

This is a great way to compress images to make your website load faster.

Fdsa I still compress my images using a free png compressor but this plugin compresses them EVEN more!!

This gives my website scores of 90+ out of 100 on desktops and even some 100’s!… (yes I need to improve my mobile speed!!)

 

6 questions bloggers need to answer

 

 

Google Analytics

This is a great way to see your stats without having to log in to Google Analytics all the time.

It can also give you some VERY useful extras to see where traffic is coming from and help you to improve your traffic strategies.

IMPORTANT NOTE- Try not to have too many Plugins (5 or less is IDEAL) as this affects your website speed and therefore SEO.

You need to decide what is important for you at what time (you can always uninstall a plugin and bring it back in later)

 

6. Do I NEED to pay for a Training Course?

Let me ask you this question in another way.

Do you want to take your website as a serious online business?

The answer to that question will decide the answer to the first question.

 

You’re intelligent enough to know that the most successful people pay for courses or mentorships to fast track their learning.

If you want to be like them then you know what the answer is.

 

With all the scams and make money online courses you see out there it can be super hard to know whether to trust a course or not.

There are literally thousands of people that create a course like this so it makes it really hard to know whom to trust.

So I’m going to throw out a few names of people that I personally trust.

 

Examples

I haven’t personally taken courses by them but I have their books, blogs, emails and read reviews. I’ve only ever heard good things (note-there are no affiliate links here I just want you to have options):

Michelle-Schroeder Gardner- Affiliate marketing ($197)

Pete McPherson- Blogging courses (courses range from $57-$299+)

Anik Singal – Email marketing (I have only seen Inbox blueprint for $997 but I am very interested in this course as it does sound impressive!)

 

I would eat my hat if you try one of their courses out and are not happy with the content.

The reason I haven’t tried their courses (yet!) is because I am going ALL IN with the course I am currently using.

 

Why?

And here are a few reasons I chose this over the others:

  • The cost is reasonable
  • It’s an ongoing platform with an extremely active community (over 100,000 members at all stages of their online marketing careers)
  • There is soooo much quality training (in different formats and always being updated) with live webinars every week (mainly SEO and affiliate marketing training in case you were wondering)
  • You get amazing hosting (worth over $200 a year)
  • It chucks in a keyword research tool (worth $19 a month)
  • I have a personal mentor (the person I joined using his affiliate link- Just like MasterCard… this is priceless)
  • You get the most out of a course if you complete it. I’m 6 months in and I am nowhere near completing the training!

This is the ONE thing that makes Grant’s book stand out like an honest man in the White House.

The best thing… 

It’s monkey simple…

 

All you have to do is work out “your number”.

 

This will make you enough money to NEVER have to work again for the rest of your life!

 

The easy way to do this is use this simple equation:

25 x Annual expenses = Your Number

e.g. 25 x $50,000 = $1.25 million

 

But how?

Simply put…

  • Index funds will return 7% per year on average in the looong run (conservatively)
  • If you had $1.25 million today you could invest this into index funds.
  • You could take 4% to live on ($50,000)
  • You leave the additional 3% in the pot to grow your pot and compound with inflation (next year the pot is now $1,287,500)
  • This means the actual AMOUNT that your 4% to live on will increase over time too (next year you could take $51,500)

#2 Build Wealth Quickly

Don’t worry amigo, Mr Sabatier doesn’t just drop that bomb then leave you high and dry!

He knows that normal people don’t have a pot of $1.25 million! 

So he spends the rest of his book showing you how it’s possible to accumulate dollar… QUICKLY!

 

The key here is the speed! 

 

Now, I can almost hear your mind saying “so this is a get rich quick book?”

No, no, no!!

 

Grant is just a realist and makes a point that so few books do…

 

A lot of personal finance books will talk a lot about compounding and letting time help you out. 

This book makes an excellent point though…

 

Our life changes! 

 

If we are aiming for $1.25 million, if we reach that number in 30 years chances are we will need a lot more.

Because of inflation and increased expenses!

Grant starts with a story about Matt, a graphic designer earning $55,000 in Chicago.

However, Matt earns $200,000 a year on his side huslte. 

Have a guess at what it is…

 

I bet my sanity that you didn’t guess dog walking!! But that’s what it is!

 

The point is you can make money from a side hustle on ANYTHING!

 

Here’s a list of side hustles Grant used to reach his number:

  • Building websites for law firms
  • Digital marketing campaigns for law firms
  • Flipping domain names
  • Doing Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) projects.
  • Flipping vintage mopeds and VW campers
  • Sold concert tickets
  • Watched neighbours cat
  • Writing whitepapers

  • It focuses our mind on how to save more money, hence closing our mind to ways to make more money
  • It kills the flame we have inside us
  • People do less fun things, which often create opportunities in life
  • We are always waiting to start living

 

Now I know it’s important to not just fritter money away so…

The only budget you’ll ever need is to reduce your spending in the 3 biggest expenses of life:

  1. Housing
  2. Transport
  3. Food

 

The book has some great tips and ideas for you to try but here are some ways you can try to find right now:

  1. Share a house with friends/ rent out a room
  2. Buy second-hand cars that hold their value… you may be able to sell it in a couple of years for more! (typically Japanese cars)
  3. Cook more! (literally more and have the leftovers for lunch)

The last point that I will mention in this financial freedom book review is the core investment strategy. 

In a world that new “investments” are being created every day it’s becoming so hard to know what the right thing to do is. 

 

Just take a look at what Google churned out about new cryptocurrencies…

No wonder people are finding it hard to know what to invest in, when “better than Bitcoin” cryptocurrencies are being invented EVERY day!

 

You’re probably wondering what you should invest in. 

 

As Grant says, it hasn’t changed for years:

  1. Property (real estate)
  2. Stocks
  3. Bonds

Your core investment should be made up around these 3 asset classes. 

 

By all means, have some more risky investment vehicles in there.

But understand that they will likely be a form of tactical gambling rather than investing.

 

As a general rule, property will give you more control (the price changes less often i.e. less volatility) and leverage (due to mortgages) but stocks and bonds are more passive.

My Final Opinion of Financial Freedom

Since you’re still here I’m going to assume you want to find a way to reach financial freedom. 

 

Have you noticed yet that financial freedom will be different for every person and it’s important to work out “your number” so that you know what the goal is?

Grant goes into a lot more detail about how you can reduce this number.

 

For example:

If you have $2,000 per month property income then you will only need $50,000-$24,000= $26,000 passive income from index funds each year.

This means your number would be 

26,000 x 25 = $650,000

You can also take off any income that you know you will be earning if you are planning to work part time or have another source of income.

The focus is on the exact right points if you have any interest in reaching financial independence to retire early (FIRE).

1. Should I pay for Hosting?

If you’re like me you probably don’t really understand what hosting is.

It’s one of those things that you know you probably should have but you don’t really understand why.

 

Wel,l good news pumpkin!

I’ve just been researching the techie part so let me try to explain in good ol’ non-techie language (or as I like to call it… English)

 

Hosting is basically a server that stores the files of your website.

Your website is really just a bunch of files… yeah, like you have on your computer.

So the hosting is kind’ve like the storage space you have on your computer… Apart from it’s “in the cloud”

 

Fun fact: Did you know there are actually these like mega warehouses that have huge computer systems that stores all the things “in the cloud”… yeah, me neither!

 

You can get hosting for free with basic WordPress packages and the likes.

However, if you would like to monetise your blog at some point it is 100% worth paying for a hosting package.

 

Here’s why:

  • It makes it easier for people to find your website
  • You can do a lot more to your website if you “own the hosting” (you don’t really own it you’re renting it, but whatever!)

 

For example, you can put in opt-in pages (to get email addresses, which helps to build a relationship with your reader) and use more plugins and things that helps to improve your website speed.

 

And do you begin to notice that “should I pay for hosting” is one of the most important questions for bloggers to answer?

 

2. Will People Care what I Write About?

3. How do I Get More Traffic to my Blog?

You probably know there are loads of ways to promote your blog post.

And of course, you’ve heard that not all of them are free.

 

Now, I can almost hear your mind saying this is possibly the most imporant of questions for bloggers to answer!

So let’s break down the difference…

 

Paid targeted website traffic

There’s really only 3 main ways to pay for traffic (visitors):

  1. 1. Facebook Ads (or other social media… Google ads are very similar)
  2. 2. Email Media (also called solo ads)
  3. 3. Sponsored posts

 

So let’s think about what the benefits and negatives are for each approach.

 

1. Facebook Ads

Running ads on social media or Google can be a great way to get specific people to look at your website or sign up to your email list.

Facebook ads still stands out compared to other social media platforms because:

 

Positives

  • Over 1 billion users
  • Can be inexpensive to advertise (starting from as little at $20 or less)
  • Targeting the “right crowd” can be very specific
  • No matter what niche, Facebook has paid targeted website traffic
  • Has the potential to go “viral” without having to pay loads of money if people interact with the ad.

Negatives

  • Easy to waste money without getting results
  • Becoming harder to make an impact with Facebook ads (it’s become more popular)
  • Easy to get people on a list that are not the correct target audience
  • Uncertain about how much engagement you will get from the ad

 

This is an affordable way to pay for getting good quality eyes on your page. There is an art to it though so more research is needed before diving in!

 

2. Email Media (solo ads)

This is when you write an email and pay someone with a list already to send this to his or her email list.

 

Within this email, you will put a link to your opt-in page or a specific website and you will usually pay in one of 2 ways:

  1.  A fee “per click” generated by the email
  2.  A set price, or a flat fee.

 

Positives:

  • Paid targeted website traffic for a very specific niche
  • Traffic can be VERY fast
  • You can be specific about how many “clicks” you want for your ad
  • If your opt-in or website page generates income it can grow exponentially (the ad would pay for itself AND some!)

Negatives:

  • Can be quite expensive (often pay $0.5-$2+ per click… so 100 clicks would cost at least $50)
  • Emails can be sent to poor quality email lists

 

Use Udimi.com if you want to find people that offer this.

Equally, if you have a large email list of 5,000+ you can offer this as a monetary service!

 

3. Sponsored posts

This is when you pay someone to write a blog post on his or her website.

 

Positives:

  • Get exposure to potentially unlimited people
  • You can choose specific blogs that are related to your niche
  • You are likely to reach targeted and specific people who will like what you write
  • Can be cheap or you can even barter (they do a sponsored post on yours in return for free or offer something else, like an email to your list/ adding to a group board on Pinterest etc.)

Negatives:

  • Very unsure about how many people will read it (some readers won’t read these types of posts as they want to only read content by the owner of the website)
  • Requires more time and effort to create a post
  • Can be hard to do if someone is in the exact same niche as you are technically competition!

 

The best part about this is it will help to build your network and you may end up with other opportunities out of it.

 

How to Get Free Website Traffic

Now let me ask you this…

Did you even bother reading the paid traffic part, eh??

 

If you didn’t then it’s definitely worth a skim just to know the basics but here is the JUICY Lucy section right here.

Buckle up sweet cheeks, you’re gonna love this…

 

1. Forum commenting

This method is loooong and I don’t even really know if it still works for 2 reasons:

 

  1. I couldn’t be bothered to keep doing it
  2. I couldn’t be bothered to keep doing it

 

Supposedly you can comment on different forums such as:

 

You can put your link to your website or an opt-in page as your signature on your comments in these forums.

If you end up getting in quick on a post that gets a heap of interest you can supposedly get a load of traffic for free.

 

To me, it seemed like there was VERY little progress and you kind’ve need to be lucky to get in early enough to be one of the first to comment on a BIG comment thread. 

So after commenting every day in different threads for a month, I stopped.

 

Note- I did get the odd person to check out my link so it definitely does work, but I felt I was taking a lot of time for very little reward.

 

But this was when I discovered…

 

2. Pinterest

This is without a doubt the BIGGEST thing I have learnt since starting this website.

This is what I used to think:

  • I had no idea why ANYONE used Pinterest.
  • I thought it was for girls.
  • It looked like it was just pretty pictures of weddings and barns.

 

However, here’s what makes Pinterest stands out like a white man in China compared to other social media platforms:

  • Pinterest is the Google of social media- people ONLY use it to find content i.e. blogs!
  • A good group board is a gold mine
  • Most other BIG social media platforms are built for user to user interaction (people go on there to see what other people are doing… Pinterest is different)

 

So, it turns out Pinterest is the biggest traffic source for my website and is starting to grow at a frightening speed.

You probably know this but improving your search engine optimisation is the golden ticket to getting free traffic!

 

If you can get your website onto page one of certain search engines then you are guaranteed to get FREE traffic EVERY month to your website.

 

The challenge is:

  1. 1. To get your website onto page one (when was the last time you clicked on a link on page 2 in Google?)
  2. 2. To do this using a keyword that people actually search for!

 

If you get onto page one for a search for a keyword like:

 

“Banana and travel investment tips”

 

You can guarantee that nobody in his or her right mind would search for that… EVER!

 

So getting onto page one is not the only challenge here.

This is where doing keyword research before you write posts will give you the cutting edge over 90% of people that own a website.

 

You can tactically manoeuvre your website onto page one in Google searches to get traffic by doing two things:

  1. 1. Choosing a keyword that people search for
  2. 2. Choosing a keyword that few competing websites are ranking on

There’s no accident in finding these magical keywords.

But you will need a keyword research tool to help.

Leaving Our Comfort Zone

We moved to Qatar to experience a new culture and lifestyle. 

Since moving out here we have realised a few things:

  • There are all sorts of job opportunities abroad (not just teachers). 
  • There are also expats who have set up their own businesses
  • A lot of young families live abroad and people have their children overseas. 
  • Thanks to the job package, saving more money is possible (it’s EASY to spend more though!)

Mindshift change!

 

Educating Ourselves

As we were able to keep more money (we weren’t really earning much more on paper!) we thought we should find out more ways to make our money work for us.

This led us to take a property course after the first year working in Qatar.

The education could easily be learnt for free but it opened our eyes to making more connections with real people to create win/ win situations.

Mindshift (again!)

 

Networking From 3,000 Miles Away with Social Media

Even though we were now living halfway around the world this didn’t stop us from taking action every time we were back in England. 

 

The funny thing about investing in property is that most of the work can be done online (make time online making sense again?)

Property investors don’t have to do all the work to a property themselves. It’s a case of finding good deals and managing them. 

Or working with people who are doing this every day to leverage their time and experience. 

 

Mike created a habit of messaging or using skype to talk to a property investor every day for over a year. 

The power of social media!!

Who Else is Not a Techie? 

This was what held me back about starting this part time job online sooner.

 

After all, I am only a PE teacher!

 

I’d heard about it being possible to make money as an affiliate marketer, but I was put off by the fact that I knew nothing about computers!

I’d heard of coding but I had no idea what it meant (YOU DON”T NEED TO CODE ANYTHING!!) 

 

The thing is…

You don’t need to go to University to find stuff out any more.

You don’t need a personal mentor.

All you need is…

YouTube!

 

I’ve learnt so many new skills that I never even thought of (let alone thought I could do):

  • SEO techniques (search engine optimisation)
  • Copywriting (writing text for advertising)
  • Proofreading 
  • Researching
  • How to optimise a website & improve its speed
  • Website design
  • Social media marketing
  • Email marketing
  • Affiliate marketing
  • Creating systems

 

Now, I’m not saying that I’m an expert at any of these things. 

But I could definitely do some freelance work for any of them!

 

Skills are the currency of the future.

 

Here’s a fact for you:

Creating a website and posting on it regularly will improve skills that you didn’t even know existed within you!

 

But How Do I Start? 

If you’re like me then you probably have no idea how to actually start all of this. 

 

What you would need to do is work out how to build a website, get the hosting and find some sort of training. 

 

If you EVER want to monetise your website, hosting is needed (a server that means your website can be accessed all over the Internet… But I won’t get into that now!)

 

You can find information about affiliate marketing for FREE.

But you’ll have to spend a LOT of time separating the wheat from the chaff!

 

So you’d be looking to spend a minimum of:

  • Bluehost ($60 for one year)
  • Domain name (~$15)
  • Affiliate marketing training ($200+)

Total= ~$275+

 

You would have to find all of this yourself, hope the training is worth it and likely be left without on-going support when you need it from real people.

 

You will also then discover other things you NEED and will likely spend more money on. 

Such as a keyword research tool or mentorship etc. 

 

Now, remember you can find all of this information for free on the Internet. 

But chances are you just want to spend your time writing and creating meaningful content.

Do any of your hobbies give you the potential to make money?

Can they make you enough money to replace your current income AND some?

 

It’s all about your mindset and priorities. 

Instead of saying “I can’t afford that” ask yourself…

This is another book that I know will rustle people’s feathers. 

Dan Lok is blunt and will make you question some of your life decisions. 

FACT!

It’s up to you how you take this though. 

You can either become offended or really think about how you can use this information. 

Are you beginning to see that Dan Lok shows another way how financial independence retire early (FIRE) doesn’t have to be a distant dream? 

It can become a reality quicker than you think.

And have you noticed yet that this is not a get rich quick book?

It’s a “use the power of the Internet to get rich quicker than you otherwise could” book.

It’s a book by someone that’s walked this path and is showing you the changes you need to make to get there. 

One thing that I know for a fact…

If you do want to reach financial independence and retire early, you will have to find ways of making more money.

Mornings

Pay close attention!!

This is without a doubt THE BEST way to find more time in a day, here’s why:

  • There are no distractions from the real world (phone buzzing, doorbell ringing, kids jumping on you etc.)
  • You have the most energy (you’ve just been asleep for a whole night and haven’t been battered by “stuff” in the day!)

 

Here’s the secret:

Set your alarm an hour earlier tomorrow, force yourself to wake up, and use this time to write. 

Repeat…

 

Now, I can almost hear your mind saying “but I’m NOT a morning person!”

… Neither am I!

Do you know what I think… I don’t think anyone is!

 

But this is what I’ve found since I’ve woken up earlier:

  • I get tired earlier… so I go to bed earlier
  • Therefore I watch less TV & waste less time
  • I think about what I’m going to write about the next day and somehow when I wake up my brain knows what to do (it’s almost like it’s figured it out in my sleep… this may sound weird but try it and let me know what happens!)
  • Therefore an hour is actually worth MUCH more than an hour

 

Just picture this for a moment…

 

The alarm goes off, you hit snooze. 

You remember you should be getting up but you just don’t want to.

You count down from 5 in your head and force yourself to roll out of bed.

It dawns on you that you’re now flopped on the floor (try to skip this part!)

You hurry to the bathroom, grab your water from next to the bed and settle down at your desk.

By the time you flick the lamp on, your brain seems to wake up.

You open your laptop, ignore everything else and start writing on a blank page.

Everything flows, you know what to write.

It’s like you’ve become Jane Austen overnight!

 

Last important note: You can wake up earlier or later than ONE hour before the habit is what’s important here.

Evenings

Do you have some time when you first get home from work?

Maybe you have kids and only get your own time when they go to bed?

 

Whatever your situation is, make sure you use these moments of time. 

It may not seem like a lot but an extra half hour a day can add up to a huge difference!

 

I’ve found it really important to listen to my own body and find out when I am most productive. 

 

The mornings are most productive to me so I write in that time. 

The evenings depends on what day I’ve had so I tend to use that time to respond to do things that require slightly less brain power!

For example:

  • Respond to comments
  • Learn something
  • Update my website
  • Read other blogs 
  • Engage with the community 

 

I know it’s different for everyone but there has to be some science in it (like I say you’ve had a whole night sleep in the morning)…

 

Find a time slot that you can use each day and turn it into a habit!

 

Possible extra time found: 1-3 hours every day

 

Weekends

This is the big one!

Since you’re still here, I’m going to assume that you take your blogging seriously.

And if that is the case your weekends are a great time to get some serious time in.

 

As you absorb this information you’ll realise this is down to personal preference so it’s worth trying out a few different ways over the next few weekends:

  • Put in 4 hours + both mornings (my favourite)
  • Put in a few hours in the morning and a few hours in later in the day (I also use this)
  • Work full on one day and rest the other (at least 8 hours)
  • Work both days (hardcore, but may be worth it if you want to see more results or you have a busy week coming up)

 

Possible extra time found: 8-20 hours every weekend

 

Holiday, Personal Leave or Sick Days

Now listen closely!

I don’t know if I should be publicly recommending this.

 

But what I do know is that nothing will make you work harder than knowing you should be at work!

 

If you’ve used up one of your precious personal leave days, you will want to make the most of working on your website here!

This is the odd day every few months (not each week!) to really hustle!

 

Here are some times it may be worth one of these days:

  • You want to get ahead because you have a busy schedule ahead (maybe you’re going on holiday and you don’t know what your internet access will be)
  • You have fallen behind with some tasks and you need to get back up to speed
  • Time to do a thorough diagnostic of your website
  • There’s a big event coming up that you are releasing or promoting 

Make sure you grind out a big day here!

 

Possible extra time found: 10-16 hours per day

 

The In-Between Moments

Are you beginning to notice how to find more time in a day?

Well, this one may be the smallest chunk of time, but it can add up to the most time you find each day!

 

There are so many chances every day you could get in a little bit more time working on your blog:

  • Commute to work (can you get an Uber instead of drive?- use this link to get a FREE trip when you sign up)
  • Lunch break (is it possible to eat doing your day job?)
  • Downtime at work- maybe you’re waiting for a meeting…
  • Travelling (train, bus, flights- I get so much done on flights or in the airport! etc.)

And do you begin to notice it doesn’t matter how hard you work? But it matters how you use your time.

Remember, make it a habit!

 

Possible extra time found: 30 mins-3 hours every day

 

TOTAL extra time in a week: 22.5-60 hours per week + vacation or sick days!

 

That is 1,200- 3,100 hours you can put into your side hustle per year! 

(a 40 hour work week for 45 weeks is 1,800 hours)

 

Top Tips for Productivity & to Keep Your Sanity

No matter what you try here are my 4 top tips:

  1. Set a 50-minute alarm- work flat out for this time then take a 10-minute rest… repeat
  2. Only work for 3 hours in a row and take at least a half hour break (I have to eat food every 3 hours to keep my body happy!)
  3. Use Trello so you know WHAT task you want to do next- it’s great for those random moments that pop up.
  4. Don’t stress if you can’t work one day or weekend due to other commitments, just make sure it doesn’t happen 2 weeks in a row (this is the same for any habit)

Just remember, real life will happen, embrace it and know you can find extra time later!

Well, here are some strategies you can use to make the most of your current situation.

 

Hack your 9-5

There are really 3 ways to make sure your day job can help you to achieve what you want:

  1. Maximise your benefits
  2. Make as much money as possible
  3. Flexibility- work from home

 

1. There are often benefits that are standard at companies and not negotiable such as health care, insurance and pension contributions. 

However, there may be things you can negotiate on such as transport, internet or phone bills etc. If you use something for work you may be able to claim it on expenses… so ask!

 

2. Asking for a raise can be very daunting but here are 4 simple steps to help you be more equipped:

  1. Work out your current market value (other companies pay for the same role)
  2. How valuable you are to the company (how much it would cost to replace you, do you go above and beyond?)
  3. Determine how much to ask for and when (use a percentage increase and explain why… ask on a Friday MORNING or during your annual performance review!)
  4. Ask!

 

3. This is where you can really make more time!

There are becoming more and more jobs where working from home is possible…

I even know teachers that have planning or curriculum days that they have been able to work from home!

 

Top tip: if your company isn’t keen – ask for a trial day at home for a few weeks and be SUPER productive!

 

Prove what you did in those days and show your boss…

One day a week can quickly become 2 or 3 or MORE!

 

Side hustle

Really think about it… If you are at all interested in the financial independence retire early (FIRE) movement, then this is what you must be focusing on!

Rare thinking people like you know that a side hustle can lead to entrepreneurship and bigger opportunities.

 

Here are some side hustle ideas:

  • Start a blog
  • Domain flipping (buy a website, improve it, sell it)
  • Become a virtual assistant (sort emails, do daily tasks for someone you’d like to learn from)
  • Become a freelancer (proofreader, copywriter, website design etc. – note this may be a skill you want to learn more about rather than be an expert on!)
  • Walk dogs
  • Babysitter (it’s possible to scale by hiring other people/ friends)
  • Gardening
  • Sourcing on property deals to investors

 

It really doesn’t matter what your side hustle is, the important thing is that you keep learning new skills!

 

Investing

There are soooo many things you can “invest” in now:

  • Cryptocurrencies
  • Fine art
  • Jewellery
  • Watches
  • Cars
  • Precious metals
  • Small businesses

Of course, you’ve heard that you should only invest in things that you understand… and this is completely true.

 

By all means, take a punt on any of the above (unless you have some amazing knowledge about them).

However, if you take investing seriously are in it for the long haul and are not “gambling” then your investment portfolio should be made up of 3 things:

  1. Property 
  2. Stocks 
  3. Bonds

 

Property has so many advantages over other forms of investment due to the control and leverage you can get from it. 

However, stocks and bonds will be the most PASSIVE and hands-off approach (if using the ultimate strategy in the article below)

Introducing Alphabet Soup!

Just picture this for a moment, you are a photography blogger and you want to write something about the best camera’s available.

 

So, you go to Google and type in “best digital camera”.

 

As you can see Google gives you ideas of what people are searching for beneath this.

 

 

Now I can hear your mind saying, what if I don’t want to write about these things.

 

Here is a great tip:

Write the word “for” at the end.

 

 

Now there’s a whole heap of ideas that you’ve been given.

If you see one that you like the idea of, then you can then change the search to get more specific ideas for this.

 

Let’s say you would like to focus on cameras for beginners…

 

 

Within a few seconds, you have received over 10 blog post ideas and you’ve found some great potential keywords for your post.

 

Do you see how “best mirrorless camera for beginners” is much more effective than “best camera”?

This is more like a Long-tail keyword, which often means your writing is more specific.

 

Thus, it will improve your chances to rank on page one of Google AND sell something!

To help receive hundreds (if not thousands) of ideas for what people are searching for simply use the alphabet soup technique.

Type in your keyword then “a”

Type in your keyword then “b” etc. etc.

Within a few minutes, you can find a low competition keyword such as “best digital camera for hunting“.

Are you beginning to see how finding blog post ideas and keyword research is very similar?

 

#2 Yahoo answers

If you want more ideas then head over to Yahoo answers.

Now you can use your blog idea of a camera for beginners to see what people are already writing about to get some more specific ideas for your keyword.

 

 

Have you noticed yet that it’s important to use a keyword that people are searching for EVERY month?

But can you make your content even better than the content out there?

 

#3 eHow

Another great website to find keywords for a website is eHow.

The same idea applies as using Yahoo answers.

 

 

Using these techniques will help to answer “how do I find keywords for a website?”.

It will also make your website stand out like a white man in China.

 

 

How Many Keywords Should I Use Per Page?

Jumping the gun are we?

 

Only rare thinking people like you already know that it’s possible to use more than one keyword per page.

 

So if your main keyword receives 100 searches per month on a search engine, imagine how many more visitors you could get if you use multiple keywords…

 

If you use subheadings with other keywords in them then it’s easy to have multiple keywords per page.

 

But how many keywords should you use per page?

Yep, you guessed it…

It depends!

  • It depends on how long your blog post is.
  • Also, it’ll depend on whether it makes sense to your post.
  • And It depends on your own preference.

That being said, I hate a cop-out answer so here’s the general rule of thumb I try to use:

 

  • Short post <1,000 words = 2-3 keywords
  • Medium post 1000-3000 words = 3-5 keywords
  • Long post >3,000 words = at least 5 keywords

For example, let me show you what I’ve used in this post that you are reading (medium length post).

Don’t Waste Your Avios Points on Certain Flights

It’s important to note here that the flights you can get from your Avios points are NOT FREE!! 

You will still have to pay tax and fees.

Therefore, it is almost pointless to use your points on short-haul flights around Europe. Budget airlines will nearly always be a similar (if not better!) price to the fees you will pay through your Avios points.

Comparing an off-peak London to Barcelona return flight in February 2019 between what you can get for your Avios points and what you find on Skyscanner (real flight cost)…

Remember, 1 point equates to roughly £1, so to waste 13,000 points on a short flight to save £50 would be more silly than a clown at a 4-year-old’s birthday partay!

An option like this would be personal preference and depend on how much travelling you do in a year. 

Taking the economy option here could leave extra points for additional flights in the year.

But you would make almost 13 times the savings on a business class direct flight if you had the points!!

Well, my clever amigo, these little tricks are the best thing since sliced bananas!

 

Warning!! This is only an option for people who are debt free and financially savvy. If you have a load of credit card debt and do not have control of your finances (sign up below to get control!) then DO NOT use this technique!!

  1. Become a POWERHOUSE with your spouse (hey that rhymes!)
  2. Cancel Avios cards, wait six months are you’re eligible to receive the “up-to-20k” bonus!
  3. Use the old “Refer a friend” trick!

 

If you’re still thinking “what the heck are you chatting about Willis” let me use an example to explain:

Here’s an example of what you can do as a couple if you spend £25,000 a year on credit cards (obviously you’ve downloaded the budget sheet above to calculate how much you spend already!)

  • Mike takes out a BA Amex card and spends £1,000 within the first 3 months to receive a bonus 5,000 points (6,000 for you if you use this link!)
  • Mike adds Sarah (his wife) as a secondary card owner of the BA Amex card
  • Sarah takes out the Amex Gold and spends £2,000 within the first 3 months to earn 20,000 points (22,000 for you if you use this link!)
  • Sarah refers Mike to the Amex Gold card for an additional 9,000 points
  • Mike spends £2,000 in the first 3 months on the Gold card to get 22,000 bonus points
  • They both cancel their Gold card as soon as this is done (they pay no fee as the first year is free!)
  • They focus on mainly spending on the BA Amex card to reach £20,000 by the end of the year to receive the companion voucher (buy one get one free plane ticket… Yes, ANY ticket… Even First Class!)
  • So after one year of spending £25,000, they will also accumulate 25,000 points.

And here is the maths:

  • 5,000
  • 20,000
  • 9,000
  • 22,000
  • 25,000

= 81,000 points!! (use the above links and yours would be 84,000 points!)

Ok pumpkin, are you ready to see how you can stand out like an honest man in the White House?

The same principles apply as above. 

Spend £25,000 a year on credit cards as a couple… but chuck in one £195 fee 

Is £195 worth 30,000 points to you?… 

You decide…

  • Mike takes out a BA Amex Premium Plus card and spends £3,000 within the first 3 months to receive a bonus 25,000 points. Plus he pays £195 fee.
  • Mike adds Sarah as a secondary card owner of the BA Amex Premium Plus card
  • Sarah (his wife) takes out the Amex Gold and spends £2,000 within the first 3 months to earn 20,000 points (22,000 for you if you use this link!)
