You probably already know that stress can reduce your performance and focus in all areas of your life.

And stress can pile up quickly in our increasingly busy lives. Getting a balance can be really hard. However, there are some quick stress relief tips that are proven to work and you can use right now.

This post will show you 9 quick stress relief tips that you can try today.

Why is Your Mindset so Important?

The Happiness Advantage is an incredible book that has proven the importance of happiness on performance. There are around 200 studies in this book that researched over 250,000 people and found one common theme…

Happiness improves performance in nearly every area of our life

  • Business
  • Health
  • Relationships
  • Creativity
  • Community involvement

So let me ask you this, do you think it is important to spend time reducing stress in our lives?

Let me tell you the story of 3 different groups of doctors in a study presented by The World Counts

One group of doctors were primed to feel happy, one group were given neutral but relevant medicine related statements to read, and one group was given nothing.

They were all given a series of symptoms to analyze.

Can you take any guesses as to how the study played out?

Well, of course, the doctors that were primed to feel happy made decisions and used more creativity to find the correct diagnosis quicker. But would you expect it to be almost 2 times as quick as the other groups?

But that’s not the most interesting part! The most fascinating part of the story is how the doctors were primed to feel happy…

They were given a piece of candy before the test…

And they weren’t even allowed to eat it before the study in case the sugar affected the results!

Now let me ask you this, if you are an online marketer or need any creativity with your job then do you think having a positive mind may help you? It’s certainly going to be necessary to reach financial independence and retire early.

So here are the quick stress relief tips you can try today to improve your performance!

#1 Meditation

You’ve probably heard that this one before.

Meditation is one of the most important high-performance habits out there. You may have seen all these celebrities talking about it and posts on social media about the magic of meditation.

But when are we mere mortals supposed to fit this into our hectic lives?

Now let me ask you this…

Do you think successful people have more time to meditate, or do you think they are successful because they meditate?

It’s the whole chicken and egg thing!

If you’re like me you probably think that meditating is for hippies sitting in a field with flowers on their hair. But let me tell you something. If you can really start letting your brain switch off more often, it will be much more powerful when you switch it on.

Yes, it will feel weird the first few times you try it.

Yes, it is easy to forget to do.

And yes, you will want to push it to the back burner when life gets busy.

You will never find the time to do anything. If you want time, you must make it.

Charles Buxton

Meditating has been scientifically proven to improve performance and reduce stress.

This fact is verified by Idea Pod. Neuroscientists researched monks that had meditated for more than 20 years. Their left prefrontal cortex (the part of their brain responsible for happiness) had actually increased in size. And it doesn’t have to be a really long time every day… even just a few minutes can have has this effect.

You’re probably wondering how to even start meditating or what you should think of. Luckily there are some great guided meditation apps available to learn about how to meditate more effectively.

Headspace (Ten 10-minute guided meditation’s for free… A great way to learn what you should be doing!)

Calm (free for teachers and some basic features for free)

Note- these are not affiliate links, they are just great apps that I have personally used!

#2 Use the Pomodoro Technique

You may have heard this before too, but my guess would not be to do with stress reduction!

Stress often sneaks up on us when we are overwhelmed. And the Pomodoro technique is a great way to feel less overwhelmed. Top internet marketers such as John Lee Dumas speak about this religiously as a time-management tip.

To simply explain what the Pomodoro technique is:

Set a 25-minute timer and focus on one task… then take a 5-minute break.

(Apologies!!! I hate it when people add “.com” to things, I have just watched a cat video so I’m in a particularly good mood)

FUN FACT: The word Pomodoro actually comes from the Italian word for tomato. This was because Francesco Cirillo developed this time-management method using a tomato-shaped timer.

When you use this technique you help to get your mind into a deep state of concentration and only focus on one thing at a time. This helps to:

  • Manage distractions and control your time
  • Increase accountability
  • Improve weekly and quarterly planning
  • Decrease back pain and mental fatigue
  • Maintain motivation

Noisili is an awesome (free) Chrome extension you can use to set a timer and send a bit of white noise into your earbuds.

The best thing is that when the time is up, the white noise stops, which is much less offputting than an alarm going off. This helps to finish your sentence or thoughts instead of being rudely interrupted!

Top tip- I’ve tried a lot of combos for the noises in noisli and I’m currently loving the fan & leaves combo. Play with it and see what works for you!

If you are looking for more ways to make more time then check out “Save Hours of Time with these Resources“. There are some apps in here you absolutely need to use your time more efficiently. Combine this with the course on using Pinterest to automate traffic and you’ll be well on your way to making way more time to sit on the beach sipping cocktails!

#3 Exercise

I can almost hear your mind saying “Oh man really, you’re saying this too?”

Well yeah!

Apart from the fact I’ve been a PE teacher for most of my adult life… it’s again scientifically proven! And it’s probably the most important of the quick stress relief tips.

Imagine what it would be like if exercise didn’t have to be super long. Or if it didn’t have to be super strenuous. In fact, it’s actually recommended it’s not either of these things to reduce stress (unless you really enjoy what it is you’re doing).

The habit is far more important than what it is you do. You really just want to achieve 2 things by exercising to relieve stress:

  1. Release serotonin (the happy hormone)
  2. Get the blood flowing through your body

A brisk 10-minute walk every day would be way better than forcing yourself to go to the gym and “smash out a 2-hour body blitz”. Especially if you were so achy and put off that you don’t do anything for the next week.

Look for ways to create a habit out of it. Here are some ideas:

  • Walk the dog every morning
  • Take the stairs at work
  • Walk to the shops instead of driving
  • Do 10 minutes of yoga in the morning
  • Cycle/ jog/ walk to work
  • Spend one minute doing one of the exercises below…

Who else likes free money?

So if you’d like to get paid for the exercise you already do, then get Achievement. You get paid just for walking, plus loads of other great ways such as taking surveys and logging other exercises that you do.

You’re missing out on free money if you don’t connect your phone with this app!

#4 Conscious Random Acts of Kindness

The important word here is conscious

Be on the lookout for ways that you can do random acts of kindness for other people. This is one of the best quick stress relief tips out there.

Big Think conducted some studies that proved that when you give money to someone else (or charity) you get a hit of positivity that lasts much longer than when you spend money on yourself.

But as you keep skimming through this article, you’re beginning to realise it doesn’t have to be big gestures or money related tasks to reduce stress.

Here are some free and easy random acts of kindness you can try to reduce stress (remember they need to be conscious!):

  • Holding the door open for someone
  • Giving someone else your last sweetie (candy for our American friends)
  • Making your family a nice dinner
  • Calling a relative you haven’t spoken to for a while
  • Massaging a loved one
  • Asking a colleague or friend about an issue they have (and LISTENING… you don’t need to fix it!)
  • Playing a game with your children or family
  • Let someone else decide what to watch on TV
  • Send a thank you email (or a handwritten note) to a colleague, family member or friend

Are you beginning to see it’s not the act that is important but the conscious attempt to help others?

#5 Writing a Grateful List

This has a double bonus!

Not only do you feel grateful for something during the day but you can get a hit of positivity when you remember this. Writing 3 things that you are grateful for is an awesome way to notice the little things.

When you are in the habit of being grateful for the things in your life, you will start to notice more of the things in your life that you should be grateful for.

If you’re looking for some quick stress relief tips, then this may just be the one you can do right now.

Top tip- Try to put down one thing you have learnt or read that day. This way these seemingly small pieces of information can produce a whole load of knowledge that you can use. Check out “What I’ve Learnt from Reading Over 100 Books in the Last 3 Years” to see how useful this information can be.

#6 Watching an Inspirational or Funny Video

This is, without doubt, the easiest of the quick stress relief tips you will find on this page.

Have you ever wondered why those cat videos are loved by so many people? I dare you to watch this and try not to smile!

These types of videos give us a hit of positivity. They make us feel good and as we now know, we are more productive and creative when we feel good.

TED talks are a great place to find some serious motivation.

If you ever have one of those “I can’t be bothered to get out of my PJ’s days” then TED talks are the place to find some inspiration you didn’t even know existed within you!

Here’s Shawn Achor (the author of the Happiness Advantage) to give you quick boost!

Top tip- Bookmark a few funny short videos that you know will make you laugh or feel happy. Watch this before you set off to write or do something creative online.

#7 Have Something to Look Forward to

No this doesn’t have to be the holiday of a lifetime, a wedding or the arrival of a baby!

It can be any simple, cheap or free activity that you enjoy. For example:

  • Date night with your partner
  • Games evening with some friends
  • Playing a sport that you enjoy
  • A movie that you want to see in the cinema
  • Invite some friends over for a party
  • A staycation
  • Spa day
  • Arrange to meet some friends for a big sports event/ concert
  • A street party with your neighbours

By planning for these fun things you have coming up you will actually get a hit of positivity when you plan it… and when you do it! That’s two for the price of one amigo!

And are you beginning to notice that positivity is the antidote for stress?

#8 Stop Using Screens Before Bed

You probably have heard that getting a good nights sleep one of the most important stress relief tips.

However, that is much easier said than done.

Sleep Foundation explains the science behind why not looking at screens before bed is the best way to improve your sleep.

Now, I can almost hear your mind thinking “but screens don’t really affect me, and I need it for my work!”

Let me guess “caffeine also doesn’t affect you right?”

Well, here’s the thing. We are becoming immune to these stimulants. The more we rely on them the more we feel like we need them to feel “normal”. But it’s not normal…

Here are the facts:

  • Screens omit an artificial “blue light”
  • This suppresses the sleep-inducing hormone (melatonin)
  • This makes it harder to fall asleep
  • We get less REM (deep sleep, the main cycle of sleep that we need to have)
  • Therefore we are less alert and awake in the morning (leaving us feeling tired and sluggish)

Top Tip- Try reading for half an hour in bed & leave your phone in another room. Steadily increase the time where you don’t look at a screen before bed… remember the habit is more important! You can increase the time before bed without screens after the habit forms!

#9 Give Someone a Hug!

Healthline has found that our body releases Oxytocin (the hug hormone) when we hug, touch or sit close to other people.

This is another one of the stress relief tips that is scientifically proven to work!

There’s not too much more to be said about this one, find someone to hug and do it! Not only will it help you, but it can be another random act of kindness that can brighten up someone else’s day too.

Side Hustlers! How to Find More Time in a Day

There may be affiliate links in this article on how to find more time in a day, read the full disclaimer here.

By the time you finish reading this article, you will be shocked at how much more you can fit in each day.

How to find more time in a day

Can you imagine how much easier it would be if you had more time to spend working on your website each day?

Visualise yourself this time next year putting an extra 2 hours a day into your side hustle.

Just think, what would you be able to achieve?

As you read every word of this web page you will discover that this is possible.

Why is Time so Important

Let me ask you if money was not an issue how would you use your time every day?

Read that again and really think about it.

If you’re like me you probably don’t think the answer to that question matters.

You may even already be skimming on to find the answers to how to find more time in a day.

But I can guarantee one thing:

If you truly know the answer to this question, it will actually help you!

For example, I want to help others live the life they want by showing them it is possible.

Time is vital in helping people get what they want, whether it is:

  • Happiness
  • Health
  • Success
  • Freedom
  • Love
  • Family
  • Travel

Are you beginning to see how time is our most important asset?

How to Find More Time in a Day?

Before we go on it’s important you read this quote three times:

You will never find time for anything. If you want it, you must make it.

Charles Buxton

Buckle up pumpkin because you’re about to discover how to find more time in a day…

Pay close attention!!

This is without a doubt THE BEST way to find more time in a day, here’s why:

  • There are no distractions from the real world (phone buzzing, doorbell ringing, kids jumping on you etc.)
  • You have the most energy (you’ve just been asleep for a whole night and haven’t been battered by “stuff” in the day!)

Here’s the secret:

Set your alarm an hour earlier tomorrow, force yourself to wake up, and use this time to write.

Now, I can almost hear your mind saying “but I’m NOT a morning person!”

… Neither am I!

Do you know what I think… I don’t think anyone is!

But this is what I’ve found since I’ve woken up earlier:

  • I get tired earlier… so I go to bed earlier
  • Therefore I watch less TV & waste less time
  • I think about what I’m going to write about the next day and somehow when I wake up my brain knows what to do (it’s almost like it’s figured it out in my sleep… this may sound weird but try it and let me know what happens!)
  • Therefore an hour is actually worth MUCH more than an hour

Just picture this for a moment…

The alarm goes off, you hit snooze.

You remember you should be getting up but you just don’t want to.

You count down from 5 in your head and force yourself to roll out of bed.

It dawns on you that you’re now flopped on the floor (try to skip this part!)

You hurry to the bathroom, grab your water from next to the bed and settle down at your desk.

By the time you flick the lamp on, your brain seems to wake up.

You open your laptop, ignore everything else and start writing on a blank page.

Everything flows, you know what to write.

It’s like you’ve become Jane Austen overnight!

Last important note: You can wake up earlier or later than ONE hour before the habit is what’s important here.

Also, check out Miracle Morning by Hal Elrod. It’s life changing!

Possible extra time found: 1-2 hours every day (worth double though!)

Do you have some time when you first get home from work?

Maybe you have kids and only get your own time when they go to bed?

Whatever your situation is, make sure you use these moments of time.

It may not seem like a lot but an extra half hour a day can add up to a huge difference!

I’ve found it really important to listen to my own body and find out when I am most productive.

The mornings are most productive to me so I write in that time.

The evenings depends on what day I’ve had so I tend to use that time to respond to do things that require slightly less brain power!

For example:

  • Respond to comments
  • Learn something
  • Update my website
  • Read other blogs
  • Engage with the community

I know it’s different for everyone but there has to be some science in it (like I say you’ve had a whole night sleep in the morning)…

Find a time slot that you can use each day and turn it into a habit!

Possible extra time found: 1-3 hours every day

This is the big one!

Since you’re still here, I’m going to assume that you take your blogging seriously.

And if that is the case your weekends are a great time to get some serious time in.

As you absorb this information you’ll realise this is down to personal preference so it’s worth trying out a few different ways over the next few weekends:

  • Put in 4 hours + both mornings (my favourite)
  • Put in a few hours in the morning and a few hours in later in the day (I also use this)
  • Work full on one day and rest the other (at least 8 hours)
  • Work both days (hardcore, but may be worth it if you want to see more results or you have a busy week coming up)

Possible extra time found: 8-20 hours every weekend

Holiday, Personal Leave or Sick Days

Now listen closely!

I don’t know if I should be publicly recommending this.

But what I do know is that nothing will make you work harder than knowing you should be at work!

If you’ve used up one of your precious personal leave days, you will want to make the most of working on your website here!

This is the odd day every few months (not each week!) to really hustle!

Here are some times it may be worth one of these days:

  • You want to get ahead because you have a busy schedule ahead (maybe you’re going on holiday and you don’t know what your internet access will be)
  • You have fallen behind with some tasks and you need to get back up to speed
  • Time to do a thorough diagnostic of your website
  • There’s a big event coming up that you are releasing or promoting

Make sure you grind out a big day here!

Possible extra time found: 10-16 hours per day

The In-Between Moments

Are you beginning to notice how to find more time in a day?

Well, this one may be the smallest chunk of time, but it can add up to the most time you find each day!

There are so many chances every day you could get in a little bit more time working on your blog:

  • Commute to work (can you get an Uber instead of drive?- use this link to get a FREE trip when you sign up)
  • Lunch break (is it possible to eat doing your day job?)
  • Downtime at work- maybe you’re waiting for a meeting…
  • Travelling (train, bus, flights- I get so much done on flights or in the airport! etc.)

And do you begin to notice it doesn’t matter how hard you work? But it matters how you use your time.

Remember, make it a habit!

Possible extra time found: 30 mins-3 hours every day

TOTAL extra time in a week: 22.5-60 hours per week + vacation or sick days!

That is 1,200- 3,100 hours you can put into your side hustle per year!

(a 40 hour work week for 45 weeks is 1,800 hours)

Top Tips for Productivity & to Keep Your Sanity

No matter what you try here are my 4 top tips:

  1. Set a 50-minute alarm- work flat out for this time then take a 10-minute rest… repeat
  2. Only work for 3 hours in a row and take at least a half hour break (I have to eat food every 3 hours to keep my body happy!)
  3. Use Trello so you know WHAT task you want to do next- it’s great for those random moments that pop up.
  4. Don’t stress if you can’t work one day or weekend due to other commitments, just make sure it doesn’t happen 2 weeks in a row (this is the same for any habit)

Just remember, real life will happen, embrace it and know you can find extra time later!

The Biggest Use of Our Time

You’re intelligent enough to know that your job will be the biggest use of your time.

Yes, you may only work 40 hours a week but the mental energy and travel time added on top means it will take up much more time than you think.

Now, I can almost hear your mind saying “but we need money to function in society and keep the rook over my head!”

Well, I’m not saying quit your job tomorrow!

So What’s the Answer?

Imagine what it would be like if you could earn enough money from another source that you didn’t HAVE to work full time.

Well, here are some strategies you can use to make the most of your current situation.

Hack your 9-5

There are really 3 ways to make sure your day job can help you to achieve what you want:

  1. Maximise your benefits
  2. Make as much money as possible
  3. Flexibility- work from home

1. There are often benefits that are standard at companies and not negotiable such as health care, insurance and pension contributions.

However, there may be things you can negotiate on such as transport, internet or phone bills etc. If you use something for work you may be able to claim it on expenses… so ask!

2. Asking for a raise can be very daunting but here are 4 simple steps to help you be more equipped:

  1. Work out your current market value (other companies pay for the same role)
  2. How valuable you are to the company (how much it would cost to replace you, do you go above and beyond?)
  3. Determine how much to ask for and when (use a percentage increase and explain why… ask on a Friday MORNING or during your annual performance review!)
  4. Ask!

3. This is where you can really make more time!

There are becoming more and more jobs where working from home is possible…

I even know teachers that have planning or curriculum days that they have been able to work from home!

Top tip: if your company isn’t keen – ask for a trial day at home for a few weeks and be SUPER productive!

Prove what you did in those days and show your boss…

One day a week can quickly become 2 or 3 or MORE!

Side hustle

Really think about it… If you are at all interested in the financial independence retire early (FIRE) movement, then this is what you must be focusing on!

Rare thinking people like you know that a side hustle can lead to entrepreneurship and bigger opportunities.

Here are some side hustle ideas:

  • Start a blog
  • Domain flipping (buy a website, improve it, sell it)
  • Become a virtual assistant (sort emails, do daily tasks for someone you’d like to learn from)
  • Become a freelancer (proofreader, copywriter, website design etc. – note this may be a skill you want to learn more about rather than be an expert on!)
  • Walk dogs
  • Babysitter (it’s possible to scale by hiring other people/ friends)
  • Gardening
  • Sourcing on property deals to investors

It really doesn’t matter what your side hustle is, the important thing is that you keep learning new skills!

There are soooo many things you can “invest” in now:

  • Cryptocurrencies
  • Fine art
  • Jewellery
  • Watches
  • Cars
  • Precious metals
  • Small businesses

Of course, you’ve heard that you should only invest in things that you understand… and this is completely true.

By all means, take a punt on any of the above (unless you have some amazing knowledge about them).

However, if you take investing seriously are in it for the long haul and are not “gambling” then your investment portfolio should be made up of 3 things:

  1. Property
  2. Stocks
  3. Bonds

Property has so many advantages over other forms of investment due to the control and leverage you can get from it.

However, stocks and bonds will be the most PASSIVE and hands-off approach (if using the ultimate strategy in the article below)

Why Make Time Online? Financial Independence Retire Early Blog

There may be affiliate links in this Financial Independence, Retire Early blog, read the full disclaimer here.

As you start reading the beginning of this article you will find yourself wondering what a Financial Independence, Retire Early blog is (FIRE).

You don’t realise it yet, but in a few short moments, you’ll begin to feel excited and curious about the future.

The further on you read, the more you’ll understand what the website name “Make Time Online” means to me and why I started this website…

The Importance of Time

Let me tell you a story… A few years ago I saw a post on Facebook asking people “What is the most important thing in your life?”

Everyone had a slightly unique answer, which was obviously personal to them, some of which include:

  • Family
  • Love
  • Happiness
  • Freedom
  • Good health
  • My children
  • Money
  • Passing on a legacy
  • Being “financially free”
  • Travel
  • My religion

At first glance, it looks like everyone had a very different “thing” that was the most important to them.

Some of the reasons JUMPED out at me.

Do you notice the ONE thing is needed for all of them?

Drift back to a happy moment with your family. Chances are you were spending some quality time with them.

You probably know that people using their time doing things through choice are happier than people who are FORCED to do something.

If someone wanted more money than Bill Gates or to be financially free, it was because of what the money could buy them…

Time to spend doing what they want!

This was the first time I heard of a Financial Independence, Retire Early blog.

Time is more valuable than money. You can always get more money but you can never get more time.

Jim Rohn

After you read this short article, you will have learned that time is important to EVERYONE:

  • People that are miserable in their job are spending their TIME doing something they are not passionate about.
  • The happiest people have control of their own schedule
  • Being stuck in traffic is soul destroying because it’s eating up your TIME!

So why don’t people have time?

Related Articles:

What’s Stopping People From Having Time?

There are only 2 reasons people don’t have enough time or do something they don’t want to do:

  1. Fear
  2. Greed

Every single person on the planet has the same time… We all have 24 hours in a day.

So how comes some people seem to be rushed off their feet the entire time they are awake and others seem to achieve so much and have all the time in the world?

Imagine, for a moment, how these two people would use their time:

  • Elon Musk
  • Homeless man

Just think about it… This homeless man could have grown up in the exact same town as Elon. He could have had the same opportunities as him and went to the same school.

The only difference is the HABITS they implemented throughout their life.

You may be thinking that Mr Musk will have to do certain things and will more likely not have as much time to spend how he liked during a day compared to the homeless guy.

Are you beginning to notice that this is a choice?

He has acted on his own passions and he has the option to do ANYTHING he would like on any given day.

Equally, the homeless guy may be very happy spending time with loved ones and living a “simple life”.

But just imagine what it would be like if you were FORCED to live a certain way because you did not have the resources to live the life you’d like.

Ways of Making More Time using the Financial Independence, Retire Early blog

Now, I can almost hear your mind saying “it would be easy to just quit your job and live like the homeless man.”

However, this is not what I mean by making more time.

I mean making MORE time to spend doing the things you REALLY love.

Wouldn’t it be amazing if you could do this, function in society and help other people?

And the best way to create time for this is to make money. Ideally through passive income. For example:

  • Invest in index funds (read this post)
  • Rental income for a property that you own

NeTime- The Best Life Hack

Everyone loves a good life hack… well this may well be the BEST!

Warren Buffet reads 500 pages a day

A few years ago some guy that I met at a property course told me a story. He said he had this ability to read over 200 books a year…

Just imagine all the things you could learn from reading 200 self-development books each year!

Of course, I was a bit suspicious so I asked him the obvious question… “How?”

His answer?…

“Use NeTime.”

What is NeTime?

NeTime stands for No Extra Time.

Rob Moore talks about it in his book “life leverage” as the best thing since the Spice Girls split up.

It is a way to use certain tasks that you do in daily life to leverage your time more efficiently and productively. Simply put you do something that you need to do and learn something new at the same time.

I am a big fan of productivity and so I thought I’d share this little humdinger with you guys!!

Mark Cuban reads for 3 hours a day

Why is it useful?

This is possibly one of the most important life hacks I have learnt in recent years.

In our busy lives, it’s so easy to sacrifice spending time exercising, reading, or doing things that we want/need to do.

NeTime is an amazing way to use your time and get double the productivity!!

You may know that it’s possible to leverage your money (get a mortgage on a rental house) or leverage other people’s experience (hire a professional to do a job for you). But I never thought it was possible to leverage your own time until a few years ago.

Bill Gates reads 50 books a year

I still don’t get it – How can we use NeTime?

There are certain tasks that we do every day that we pretty much do on autopilot.

For example:

  • Driving
  • Cooking
  • Cleaning
  • Gardening
  • Shopping
  • Eating
  • Exercising (in the gym/ running/ HIIT etc.)

Some of these tasks may be times when you can use NeTime!

It is possible to use this time to listen to audiobooks or podcasts and gain some valuable knowledge. It’s possible to learn from somebody else’s mistakes whilst doing mundane tasks.

This is exactly what the guy that I met a few years ago did and it’s exactly what I have started doing. It doesn’t take up any extra time and it helps me to listen to so many more books than I would be able to read each year.

Whilst some of these tasks may be a social time and not suitable to stick a set of headphones on I have found that so many opportunities pop up EVERY day and often when I ‘m not expecting it. For example, I am actually on a school trip right now… I drove ahead to set up the activities. I used the time in the car to listen to a few podcasts and now I have a bit of time before the students arrive.

I’ve never been a fan of running but listening to audiobooks and podcasts certainly helped me get through this marathon!

What Should I Read or Listen to?

Tom Corley studied successful people for 5 years and produced his book “Rich Habits“. His research discovered that rich people read for self-improvement and to learn. Poor people read to be entertained.

I know what you’re thinking… “I like to read to relax”… or “I just don’t have the time for it”… or “I’m too tired after a busy day at work.”

I KNOW! This is exactly what I used to say to myself.

However, choosing the right books to start with changed this for me. Starting with a book about taxes is probably a BAD place to start. Getting recommendations (click here to see my recommendations) and finding a style of writing that suits you is important… once the habit is in place it’s hard to stop!

We can continue to make excuses for our daily choices but it is proven time and again that the most successful people have good habits in place. I also have one question for you…

How much time do you spend watching TV each day?

I’m not saying you have to completely stop watching your favourite shows. I’m just asking whether you really need to channel hop and watch some random series you’ve never heard of before because you need to “relax”.

Successful people learn more in their free time.

Top Tips for NeTime

Here are some top tips to make the most of NeTime:

  • Have audiobooks or podcasts ready to listen to
  • Look out for random times during the day where it is possible (walking the dog, waiting for your kids at their school, getting a haircut etc.)
  • Always have headphones in your pocket. You may end up in the shops or somewhere that is perfect to use NeTime when least expect it.
  • Make a list of potential books or podcasts that you want to listen to as soon as you hear them (I use Evernote – an app on my phone – to store all this information)

There is one amazing tip that you can use to really make this time even more efficient…

Listen to everything on x2 speed.

The first time you do this it will just sound like a blur and be very hard to actually take anything in. But it’s amazing how quickly your brain gets used to this! Once you are used to it you will actually find it hard to listen to them at a normal speed… it sounds like they are about to fall asleep!

The Make Time Online Summary

If you want to learn like the most successful people in the world then it is so important to leverage your time.

Using tasks to listen to books using NeTime is a great way to increase the amount of knowledge you can take in… and it literally takes up No Extra Time!

If you really want to improve your business or your life then reading or listening to books is a proven habit that will help you do this.

How to Write a Personal Mission Statement in 3 Steps – With Examples

You may have seen mission statements in a workplace. All good companies will have a mission statement and ensure their employees know about it.

It is also important that we have our own personal mission statement.

This can sound like quite a confusing thing to do and seem like hard work to make one.

I am going to show you not only how to create a mission statement, but also how it ends up saving you so much time in the long run.

What is a Personal Mission Statement?

A personal mission statement is a very short description of who you are.

It explains your life’s purpose.

These sound like very BIG and deep things to have to think about… and they are! But if you really want to live a life you are happy with and proud of, it is absolutely necessary.

Without this statement, every decision we make in life becomes harder than driving through wet cement with an elephant on the car.

Why is a Personal Mission Statement Important?

You are at a funeral. There are thousands of people there. There are tears running down people’s faces but they are tears of pride to have known this person.

A man steps up to read the eulogy. Story after story is told about how this person had helped people and laughter constantly fills the air.

You then get a closer look at the person in the casket… and you realise it is YOU!

Sorry! A bit morbid, I know!

The point I’m trying to make is that if you want to have an impact like this, or if you would want people to say certain words at your eulogy… you HAVE to have a personal mission statement.

Here are 3 reasons why it’s so important:

  • It helps you to know how to focus on your long-term goals.
  • It helps you to create a life you want rather than letting life dictate you.
  • It provides clarity over what is important to you.

How to write your Personal Mission Statement

This is the hard part. But I’m going to break it down into small chunks to make it a bit easier.

If you really want to get the benefits of a personal mission statement you do actually have to really think about it!

Before you can just write your statement out it’s important to understand what your values are in life. This will help to clarify what is important to you.

It’s also important to note that your personal mission statement will probably change over time so you don’t need to worry about making one perfect right now.

Step one- Find out your own Values?

To find out your values, just think about what you feel is most important in your life (not what your parents want you to think or your friends or colleagues… only you!)

Questions to consider:

  • What do you spend most of your time doing?
  • What would you love to do all day without external pressure?
  • What do you fill your space with (home, office, car etc.)?
  • What do you consistently think about?
  • What are you most known for?

Here are 2 steps to getting your values in order:

  1. Write down concepts such as family, health, learning, happiness, freedom, travel etc. Keep going until you run out of words or you look at the concepts and don’t feel inspired by them.
  2. Evaluate the list carefully, then reorder or remove according to what is most important to your life (e.g. move travel up the list)

Step two- Answer 5 Questions to help narrow down the Mission Statement

Once you have your values answer these 5 questions:

1. What is important to me? Using your values are there any specific things or people that are most important to you?

2. Where do I want to go? Your answer may involve a spiritual, mental, or physical destination. It might describe your career or what you want to achieve.

3. What does “the best” look like for me? This isn’t the time to be realistic. This is the time to dream. Think BIG!

4. How do I want to act? How do you want people to describe you? Think about the eulogy example earlier. What would you like people to say about you at your funeral?

5. What kind of legacy do I want to leave behind? Imagine you’re 100 years in the future. What does the impact you’ve left look like?

Step three- Get it written down- Top Tips

Once you have answered the above questions it’s time to actually get your personal mission statement written down.

Here are 4 tips to making sure it is effective:

  1. No more than 2 sentences long
  2. Easily understood by a twelve-year-old
  3. Able to be recited by memory
  4. A statement that creates priorities in your life

Just remember it WILL change over time! Don’t worry about it being perfect right now just get it written down.

Some Example’s of Personal Mission Statements

I always find it easier to do something when I can see examples… So here they are:

“To be a teacher. And to be known for inspiring my students to be more than they thought they could be.” — Oprah Winfrey

“To have fun in [my] journey through life and learn from [my] mistakes.” — Sir Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group

“I shall not bear ill will toward anyone. I shall conquer untruth by truth.” — Mahatma Gandhi

And my own personal mission statement… (please note it has been adapted and changed a lot over the last few years and is still ongoing!)

“To help others live the life they want by showing them it is possible.” — Mike, Make Time Online

The Make Time Online Summary

Every decision you make in life is a lot easier when you know what your own personal mission statement is.

It helps to provide you with a vision and purpose.

To help others live the life they want by showing them it is possible

If you are doing something that doesn’t align with your mission statement it will become very hard to do it… so start doing more that aligns with your personal statement!

Just remember if you really think about your personal mission statement, then it will change over time as you tweak and polish it.

How to Form Good Habits- Recommended Read

I have previously written about the importance of building and nurturing your network. This post will show you how to form a good habit for networking!

Networking Habit

Something in the online community that I have noticed is that it’s so important to share other people’s work. Especially when it has ticked a couple of boxes:

  1. It has to be REALLY good!
  2. It has to align with your own beliefs and content.

I can safely say this post does exactly that!

Who was this article written by?

It was written by Jason Ong, who is a lifestyle blogger. He has so many interesting articles about health, happiness and productivity.

He has lived a “good life” as he claims, but he found himself feeling lonely and stuck in the rat race of going to work, getting home, eating, sleeping and repeat!

He has found living in the moment and appreciating the things that he has got has helped him find more happiness and he documents what he has learnt along the way.

Notice this is who Jason is, not what Jason does. A person’s profession is one tiny part of someone’s life and does not tell us who a person is! Read more about Jason here

Anyway, I recently stumbled across one of his posts about how to form good habits and thought it was too good to keep to myself!

What is this post about?

Now, I hold habits as a very high priority. Believe it or not, human beings are creatures of habits! Therefore the habits we form will determine our lives.

If you want to achieve something in your life it will be decided by your habits. So it only makes sense for us to focus on how to form good habits if we want to focus on living a “successful” life.

Without any further ado… here is his article. You will not regret reading it!

What are your good habits? Do you have any tips on how to embed them into daily life?

Get comfortable being uncomfortable

It is impossible to make a change when we are comfortable. The fact is that growth only occurs in a state of discomfort.

So our aim should be to “get comfortable being uncomfortable” (or seek discomfort in our lives). Let me give you an example to explain what I mean…

Do you ever get uncomfortable when you have to walk to the fridge to get some food? Do you even notice that you walked there?

However, when a baby learns to walk it will try to stand up and fall over. It will take a step and fall over again. The baby doesn’t fall over once and give up. They won’t just say, “Oh well I guess I will just crawl for the rest of my life!”

The baby knows that it wants to walk! It has to walk! It doesn’t matter how many setbacks there are on the way to learning how to walk, they will get through them and they will learn!

At the start, it is uncomfortable for them. But once we master it, it becomes something we don’t even realise any more. We become comfortable at something that used to be uncomfortable.

I have written about this before on the first blog that Sarah and I started. I always find it weird how the same idea comes up a few times in one week. I’ve never known if this was because I am aware of it so I notice the same thing popping up in conversations or if there is some weird magic going on.

The three times it has popped up in my life over the past week:

Strike 1- I was on a course about coaching

This seems to be a popular term in business currently. I was in England last week and the keynote speaker told us a story:

There were a couple of moose hunters in Russia, Slav and Nikita.

They went out hunting and caught a huge moose just before Christmas. A small snow plane stopped near where they had killed their moose so they asked the pilot if he could give them a hand taking this monster back to the local village.

The pilot said, “no, no, no the plane won’t take off if I tie this huge creature to the bottom of it!”

Slav turns to Nikita and says, “that pilot last year did it without hesitation have you still got his number?”

At this point, the pilot thought that if they have done this before it must be possible so he agreed to give it a go.

The plane starts moving and takes off just before the big trees. It climbs higher and higher but it can’t avoid the huge tree behind the first big one… The plane comes hurtling back to the ground and everyone is thrown out of the plane.

Nikita calls out “Slav!! Where are you?”….

Slav replies, “about 100 yards further than where we got last year!!”

The point of the story is that we can improve or we can change. Did Slav and Nikita improve from last year? Yes! Would it have been better if they had changed their plan to get the moose back to the village? Definitely!

First, figure out what you need to do and then carry it out… But change is hard! Doing something differently to how we have always done it requires us to move out of our comfort zone.

This is the same with everything we do in life.

Strike 2- Youtube

I look on youtube and the first video that pops up is a TedX talk about “Why comfort will ruin your life”.

I thought the title was a bit extreme so naturally, I watched it!

It turns out Bill Eckstrom is talking about the exact same thing. To grow we must become uncomfortable. The best thing that happened in his life was getting fired in the financial crash of 2008. He was forced to become uncomfortable and it helped him do things he never imagined he could do (including give a Ted Talk).

He talks about the four growth rings:

Stagnation- This is the zone where we will not grow. We are just going around in circles and there is no place for creativity or control.

Order- This is a place where we repeat the same cycle but we are comfortable. It’s easy to do and we feel in control because it brings us regular rewards or some level of satisfaction. However, we do not grow and improve in this ring.

Complexity- This is the zone where true growth happens. This is the place where we can become better and learn. To get here though, we must become uncomfortable.

Chaos- In this ring, we are not learning, we are not growing, things are out of control and chaos unfolds around us.

There are 3 ways we can get into the complexity ring.

  1. It can be forced- We are thrown into the complexity ring by an external force.
  2. Someone can help you get there- This is often the role of parents, teachers and coaches to help people we want to succeed get there. It is too easy to stay in your comfort zone, so we often need someone to help us get there. This is why so many people have personal trainers or why sports teams have multiple coaches.
  3. Trigger it yourself- This is, of course, possible but it is far too easy to stay put. If you don’t want to pay for a coach or you would rather not have something forced upon you, you HAVE to trigger this yourself.

Take, for example, our health. If you never exercise and only eat Big Macs you WILL become ill. Your lifestyle will be forced to change either because you end up in a hospital or because your doctor or loved ones help you to change.

However, if you can be proactive and make sure you exercise and mainly eat healthy meals, there is a good chance you will remain in good health.

Strike 3- Instagram

I put a quote on Instagram saying

“action is the antidote to fear”

Someone replied telling me to get used to being uncomfortable. I thought that was just weird, but like I say maybe I was looking for it!

Make Time Online Summary

If we truly want to see growth within our lives then we have to start triggering discomfort ourselves. We need to find a way to move into the complexity ring by ourselves without having to rely on other people to put us there.

If we don’t do this with our financial life, sooner or later, we will be forced into this ring and there’s a good chance we’ll end up in chaos (just like with our health when eating Big Macs all the time!)

The more I learn, the more I realise the internet is sure to be the future of businesses. It’s never been easier to start an online business, yet there are still so few people, in comparison to the masses, that have realised this!

If you want to see how I’ve started my online business, then check out my #1 recommendation here.

Do Most People Hate Their Jobs?… Research says YES!

Since 2000, Gallup has polled millions of employees from over 200 countries to work out the answer to “do most people hate their jobs?”. They reported that 85% of all people hate their jobs.

Work has been reported more often a source of frustration than fulfilment for 90% of employees. Employees that don’t enjoy their jobs typically are “emotionally disconnected” and “disengaged”. Some countries in Asia and Africa have a much higher rate of “disengagement” but even more developed countries, such as the United States, has 70% of employees that hate their job.

The question begs to be asked. Why do so many people hate their jobs?

5 Things Forcing Employees to Resent Their Jobs

Longer Hours

Employees are expected to work longer and longer. Working weeks of over 50 hours (don’t forget to include travel time!!) is very typical for a lot of jobs. Due to the high competition for each job people feel they have to justify why they have this position and therefore work longer!

Trivial Work- Low Self Gratification

More and more “service jobs” (McJobs) are being filled by overqualified people. Technical positions are being shipped overseas to cheaper areas. This means employees are left with a gap not being filled. They do not feel like they are contributing what they can to society and are left with that empty feeling.

Not Rewarded for Hard Work

The majority of jobs still pay people based on how many hours they work. Employees sign a contract that says something like “I will work 45 hours a week, with an expectation to do more on some weekends”. The employee gets paid the same amount every month no matter how well they do they job.

Our Wages seem to be Going Down

“Each year my pay goes up (slightly) but every year it feels harder to do the same things I did last year”. I remember a colleague telling me this when I first started teaching.

This was around the same time that was reading and learning a lot about the world economy (because it never made any sense to me!) The short answer to this concern is that it is true… 100% true. Inflation means that our money doesn’t go as far each year, unless your employer hands out 10% pay rises (I’m not even joking about the amount – stay tuned for a future post about inflation… it’s frightening!)

Does Job Security Even Exist Anymore?

Remember employees don’t get paid extra for doing great work… well they may get fired if they don’t do their job well enough! I remember hearing Ross on friends saying that he got “tenure” at his job. I had no idea what this meant at the time, but it has historically been possible for people to get a job for life. People under 30 are probably not even aware this is (was) a thing!

So What Can You Do?

To be honest, there is a way out. The Internet has literally created a new era for human beings and it’s called “the information age”. Knowledge becomes information and information is money in today’s world. Therefore, all you need to get started is some knowledge about anything… and not even a lot because you can (and will) learn as you go.

If you were to work as hard on the Internet as you were at your job you would 100% be more successful (in terms of value you provide, self-gratification and money that you earn). There are lots of reasons for this but here are a few (to read more click here):

  • It’s easy to build an online presence (Click here to build a website in the next 5 minutes)
  • There are fewer barriers to starting your own online business compared to most businesses (you just need a laptop, or phone and internet connection)
  • There are more people online every day = More money being spent online every day
  • Make money by the second, not by the month.

One of the worst relationships we have is… using time to earn money. It has been ingrained into us that the best way to earn more money is to work harder and longer. It’s important to remember that if you have grown up with “formal education” you have been taught how to become an employee.

The information age creates so many NEW opportunities that our teachers, parents and their parents won’t even be aware of. It’s important to think carefully about where we receive our information from.

Are You Too Comfortable?

Do you really HATE your job? If you do that’s great! It’s so much easier to change something when we reeeeaaaaallllllly HATE it.

If you are one of those people (like me!) who actually quite enjoys their job but you feel like there is more to life than doing it for the next 20-50 years, then, unfortunately, your situation is harder. You are too comfortable right now so it makes changing very hard as you have to visualise your future self. EURGH I KNOW!

What a lot of people will do when they really hate their job is quit… and then find another one. The problem is that a few months or years down the line they are back in that same position. So they quit and find another one. I’m sure you get the idea.

So the bad news is you are likely to be unhappy with your current job situation (like 85% of people). The good news is there is a way out of the day to day grind, and no experience is necessary!

My current working space

Do you Want to Change?

If you are ready to make a change you have to know that it will require more work of you right now. The key here is the words RIGHT NOW. It doesn’t mean you will have to work harder or longer forever (or even for too long).

The plan is to stop NEEDING to work full time. When this happens you will actually work a lot less. To get to this stage without giving your whole lifestyle up right now you will have to work harder initially.

I am currently putting in an extra 2 hours every day (Sarah keeps telling me off when I spend more- like right now… Coming Dear!!!), so note it doesn’t have to be a huge commitment. I have spoken to people that started with 5 hours a week and some that stayed up late each night to commit more time to their online business.

Just remember we want to separate ourselves from the time and money relationship. What you DO with that time is far more important. Unfortunately, when starting out it can seem overwhelming and hard to know what to actually do.

This is why I’ve started using Wealthy Affiliate. There is step-by-step training to help you get your online business up and running… no matter what you’re interested in! The support is amazing, any question will get answered quickly as there will be someone else that had the exact same thought before. You will 100% have support from at least one person too (me!)

If you have any questions or want to vent about something at work please leave them below. I’m sure that I can personally help you out as I have been there and done that!
